Ethical, Legal, and Clinical Considerations in the Assessment and Treatment of the Suicidal Patient - 5/25/2012 from 7:30 am-12pm

Suicide is a public health crisis that has not received the attention it deserves. As a consequence, the assessment of suicide is one of the most challenging but essential tasks for mental health professionals and substance abuse counselors. This half-day training with Dr. Johnson will provide an overview of suicide assessment that will begin by examining risk factors associated with suicide.The training will then focus on practical techniques and strategies to elicit information from patients on suicide ideation, intent, and planning that can be used for treatment planning. The training will end by addressing other standard of care issues related to suicide assessment (e.g., defensible documentation strategies) to ensure that professional duties related to suicide assessment have been met.

Michael Kahn, JD, LPC will provide a training for participants understand and conceptualize grief and discuss various grief models. He will explore a variety of creative interventions and how a therapist's experiences with loss can impact the therapeutic process. Michael will explain why self-care is critical for the professional who counsels grieving clients and what participants can do to nurture themselves.
